BOGUS ENQUIRIES VIA THE INTERNET

Recently, GDS received an enquiry for 10 laptop repairs. After a quotation and several emails later, a cheque arrived (without any accompanying letter etc - very strange). However it was banked and several days later it returned 'UNPAID'. Apparently the cheque was a counterfeit cheque. So beware that this is a possible issue with internet enquiries

Recently Microsoft Security software has identified Google Chrome as a Zbot variant!

The Microsoft software in question is the Microsoft Security Essentials.
Google's Chrome browser which appears to be the most secure browser on the internet, has been
released as a new version, following the revelation that it (Google Chrome) was being identified as a nasty Win32/Zbot by the Microsoft security software.
Now why would a rival internet security browser company want to identify (probably the chief) competitor's browser as an internet security threat? HMMMMMMMM. Want to know more?

Ads On Bing Are Serving Up Malware

A recent post by Ed Bott of ZDNet, has highlighted a threat to users of the Bing Search engine.
It appears that certain ads for well known free software are being served up by malware sites.
Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox browers are two ads which have been used.
Others include, Adobe Flashplayer, Adobe Reader, Google Earth and Utorrent.
If you want these only download them from the official sites
and PLEASE type the site address into the address bar DONT USE LINKS.

An Email Scam To Watch Out For

Recently people have been infected by a new email nasty
It works like this, person A gets infected - how is not known presently
An email from Person A is sent out to the contacts in their contacts list
The email suggests there has been a problem whilst in some city
And could the recipient of the email wire them some money with a promise to pay it back

when they are out of the city. The money should be wired via Western Union or a stated bank
This type of email has been seen twice within a month
If you do get one, email the person who is supposed to have sent it to you
USING A NEW EMAIL - DO NOT USE REPLY to ask if they know about this
Do take care as email scammers are getting very cunning in what they send out

News of malware using WEBCAMs to spy on the user are being reported
Windows The Official Magazine reported in Issue 54 Page 21 in its
Seven Golden Security Rules While Instant Messaging
That malware was being used to spy on webcam users. Also there are reports from
other sources that a piece of software
was placed on schoolchildren's laptops (without their knowledge apparently ),
to locate the laptops. The school authorities justified their actions on the basis
that it was an attempt to combat the rising laptop theft

SUGGEST that you cover your webcam if it permanently connected to your PC
and especially if your have a laptop with an integral laptop.
A piece of masking tape ought to do the trick.

Tiscali Customers Still Not Out Of The Woods!

Just when you thought it was all done and dusted. Tiscali customers(read Talk Talk here)
are still suffering with issues connecting to the internet.
After talking with a customer, who has had a Tiscali broadband account for sometime,
it became apparent that Talk Talk have still not got all the issues sorted out.
The customer has had loss of internet access for 3days now
(usually systems are back up and running within 24hrs), though to be fair to Talk Talk,
their Technical Support line is being answered and the customer was contacted
to see if the issue had been resolved. In this case it had not.

What was really concerning for the customer, who uses the internet for business use
was that he needed to get his accounts to the accountant for preparation, before the deadline
(11 days hence). It will be touch and go with the situation as it is at the moment.
Watch this space......

Further news on Tiscali .... Situation resolved and Hats Off to their technical support, though a dead router and a duff replacement router, didn't help.

Are you a BT broadband customer and are you aware of BT FON

Do you realise that part of your broadband is used to provide other BT users with a free broadband if they are close enough to access your 'hotspot'.

Actually people can access your BF-FON if they become a member of BT-FON (BT Broadband users are automatically members) and have it switched on by default.

If you feel this is what you want and do not have BT broadband then you will be interested in the quote below.

"If you have broadband at home provided by someone else, you can join the community by buying a FON Wi-Fi router.

This provides the same safe access for community members and comes with a FON account so you can access any BT FON hotspot while out and about.

Find out more at Register at BTFon

But please make sure your security is ALWAYS kept upto date and active.

Further make sure you have at least two forms of ANTISPYWARE programs installed.

These should be updated & your system scanned at least twice a week

Look for Free Software on the navigation panel.

"Do I have to be a BT Broadband customer to join BT FON?

No. But BT Broadband customers are automatically opted-in to the BT FON community"

To opt-out of BT FON simply follow the steps below:

Go to BTFON

Click on the ‘Check Status’ link on the left of the page.

Enter your btinternet email address and password and click on the ‘Check Status’ link.

Scroll down to the opt-out section.
