Computers consist of a number of electronic and some mechanical parts. The mechanical parts (generally fans and drives) are the most likely failure points in a computer system. Regular health checks can eliminate most trouble before it becomes critical. These are vital components in that the hard drive contains your operating system, your installed programs but most importantly YOUR DATA.
The processor fan keeps your processor (e.g Intel or AMD processor) COOL if it fails one of two things generally happens. Either the processor overheats and becomes useless (killing the system until a replacement is installed) or the system shuts down abruptly, and will eventually allow you to start it again only to do the same, again (not advisable).
